Naima's Foliage Hue Mixed Technique | 5'-2" x 8'
This mixed Zanafi x Hand-Knot rug was handwoven by Naima and the artisans of Association Le Vieux Village, a collective of women artisans based just outside of Tazenakht.
The association is a true family affair. Mlouka, the matriarch of the collective, passed the art of weaving down to her daughters, Naima and Fatima, as well as her daughters-in-law, Latifa and Meriem, cousins, and other women from the village. Each rug from Le Vieux Village is made from 100% live wool, which is brushed, carded, and spun by the women of the association.
The border of this piece is woven with natural, undyed wool, while the hand-knotted portion is colored with plant-based dyes made from pomegranate skin, saffron, bark, and other local plants and spices. The abstract central design feels modern in its composition, yet it carries forward thousands of years of artistic tradition.
