Meriem's Diamond Trellis Flatweave | 7'-1" x 10'-1"
This rug was handwoven by Meriem.
Meriem is part of a women-only association located in a village about 30 km north of Tazenakht, a town known for its rich weaving heritage. Founded in 2007, the Anzal collective continues to preserve this craft through women passing their knowledge down from one generation to the next.
The Zanafi weaving technique originates in the High Atlas Mountains and requires an exceptional level of skill and concentration. Each row is created through an intricate system of counting, resulting in a precise, reversible flatweave. On each side, the colors of the symbols are inverted, making the piece equally beautiful from either direction.
The design is intricately woven with Amazigh symbolism. Its repeated diamond motif represents protection from evil, bringing both meaning and visual rhythm to the piece.
